This 14 days tour takes us through some of Botswana and Zimbabwe’s magnificent national parks, starting at the spectacular Victoria Falls and ending in Kasane.   • Victoria Falls – located on the Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls has been described as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls is classified as the largest. Victoria Falls is roughly twice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls.
  • Hwange National Park – accounting for an area of 14,651km² being approximately half the size of Belgium it is the largest national park in Zimbabwe and home to big herds of the African elephant. Hwange boasts an abundance of other wildlife including buffalo, the wild dog, lion, leopard and a host of other species. The prolific birdlife is a must see for the enthusiast with one of the world’s most diverse population of raptors.
  • The journey leads us through Bulawayo the second largest city in Zimbabwe, Maun the gateway to the Okavango Delta in Botswana
  • Matopos National Park – track the endangered rhinos on foot, explore the dramatic rocky landscapes and visit the unique burial site of Cecil John Rhodes, chosen as his final resting place for its breath taking view in Matopos National Park.
  • The Makgadikgadi Pans – salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savannah of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up tens of thousands of years ago.
  • Chobe National Park – Chobe National Park is home to the world’s largest population of elephants. The land of giants, as it is locally known, almost covers an area of 12 000 square kilometres – perfect for your Chobe National Park safari. On the northern part of this jewel land and by the river front, you will encounter large herds of elephants and cape buffalos as they quench their thirst during Botswana’s famously dry summer months.

Itinerary 

Day 1: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

On arrival at Victoria Falls airport, you will be met by a Supertime representative and transferred to your lodge. The rest of the afternoon may be spent at leisure, relaxing by the swimming pool. This evening you will meet your tour guide and the rest of your group for your pre-departure meeting.

Day 2: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

After breakfast you will visit the waterfall on a guided tour. The rest of the day is open for optional activities and your guide will be there to assist you.

Day 3: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

This morning you depart from Victoria Falls and make your way to Hwange National Park where you will spend the next two nights. Enroute you will visit the Painted Dog Conservation Centre to witness the incredible efforts employed to protect these predators.  This evening is at leisure and you can relax by the lodge and hope to see animals coming down by the lodge waterhole for a drink or take an optional evening/sunset orientation game drive.

Day 4: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Enjoy one of Africa’s finest havens for wildlife and home to vast herds of elephant and buffalo on a full day game viewing in the park with picnic lunch and refreshments.

Day 5: Matopos National Park, Zimbabwe

After breakfast, you continue your safari with a drive to Matopos National Park, enroute you pass through Painted Dog Conservation Centre and Bulawayo City affectionately known as the ‘The City of Kings’ dating back to the era of Lobengula the King of the Ndebele tribe.

Day 6: Matopos National Park, Zimbabwe

This morning you will participate on Rhino Tracking safari in the Matops National Park and then return to the lodge for a brunch. By the lodge environs enjoy the scenic views of this granite boulder topography, and in the evening visit Cecil John Rhodes grave at the famous ‘World View” plus one of the bushman caves.

Day 7: Magkadigkadi Salt Pans, Botswana

Today you will need to get up early, being one of your considerable long drives of the safari. Leaving Matopos National Park behind you will cross into Botswana via Plumtree border to Nata Lodge situated next to the landmark of the Great Magkadigkadi Salt Pans. In the evening you will head off to Nata Bird Sanctuary to enjoy the magnificent view of the Sowa Pan forming part of the famous salt pans.

Day 8:  Maun, Botswana

This morning we head off to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. The name Maun is derived from the San word “Maung”, which means “the place of short reeds”. Why not take an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta. Conservationists have taken a great interest in the preservation of the Botswana Delta, as it is such an exceptional area of Africa.

Day 9:  Khwai & Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana

After breakfast we will be picked up by our local Botswana guides and take a short drive to the mokoro station. From here, we will float in these traditional dug-out canoes through the thick vegetation of the Okavango Delta discovering a variety of birds and wildlife. Unlike other deltas, it flows into the Kalahari Desert without ever reaching the coast. After this spectacular excursion, we make our way to our camp, which is situated in the greater Khwai Wildlife Management area. After settling into our camp, we will enjoy dinner and some bush chats around a campfire.

Day 10 -11: Khwai & Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana

You will spend these 2 consecutive days doing game viewing in this most beautiful and varied reserve with an unprecedented concentration of wildlife. Game drives will be subdivided into one full day and the second day on morning and evening drives punctuated with siesta at the camp.

Day 12: Khwai to Chobe National Park, Botswana

We have to get up early, as this will be the longest day of our safari with a full day ahead of us. We leave the camp in the Greater Moremi area and transit through the Chobe National Park from the southern to northern part, driving through Savuti area. Enroute there will be a good chance of game viewing. Our lodge is situated on the bank of the Chobe River a short distance from its confluence with the mighty Zambezi River at Kazungula.

We may have the option of a charter flight from Khwai airstrip to Kasane airport.  Upon arrival at the Kasane airport we will then be transferred to our lodge. The rest of the evening will be at leisure.

Day 13: Chobe National Park, Botswana

Today you will have an early morning game drive before returning to the lodge for a sumptuous breakfast. In the afternoon you round of your day with a sunset cruise on the Chobe River. Here you can watch elephants, hippos, crocodiles and a variety of birds, making for excellent up close photo opportunities.

Day 14: Victoria Falls Airport

Itinerary

Day 1: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

On arrival at the Victoria Falls airport, you will be met by a Supertime Safaris representative and transferred to Hwange Safari Lodge situated on a private concession that borders Hwange National Park. Mineral water will be provided during this transfer. The rest of the evening you will relax by lodge facilities. The lodge is overlooking a perennial waterhole that present an excellent opportunity to see game coming down for a drink especially at sundown.

Day 2: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

06:00hrs
After breakfast you will enjoy a full day game drive into Hwange National Park. Lunch will be served at a picnic site in the park. Soft drinks and bottled water will be provided during the game drive.

Day 3: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Today you will be transferred by road from Hwange Safari Lodge to Victoria Falls. Lunch is on your account

16:00hrs    Sunset Cruise
In the afternoon, take a Sundowner Cruise down the Zambezi River. There is no better way to end the day than to watch an African Sun slip down the horizon, while sipping drinks and enjoying light snacks. Birds, hippos and crocodiles are abounding in their natural habitat.

Day 4: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

08:00hrs    Guided Tour of the Falls
Visit the magnificent Victoria Falls with a professional guide, venture through the rainforest and take with you memories of your life time holiday. Experience the premier Zimbabwean jewel tipped as one of the seven natural wonders in the world as 550 000 m3 at full volume tumble into the Batoka Gorge with a deafening sound sending sprays that sustain the surrounding rainforest all year round. Day 5: Transfer to Chobe National Park, Botswana

After breakfast, you will be transferred via Kazungula border to Chobe Safari Lodge in Botswana for your last 2 nights stay.  Chobe Safari Lodge is situated on the banks of the Chobe River in northern Botswana. This afternoon you enjoy a game drive in the Chobe National Park.

Day 6: Chobe National Park, Botswana

You kick this day with an early morning game drive before you return to the lodge for breakfast. This afternoon you will enjoy a Sunset boat cruise on the Chobe River with a cash bar.

On arrival at the Oliver Tambo international airport you will be met by a Supertime representative and transferred to the Safari Club. You have the remainder of the day at leisure. This evening you will meet your guide and the rest of the group for your pre-departure meeting at 18h00.

Day 2: Mabula Game Reserve, South Africa

An early morning departure from The Safari Club in Johannesburg takes us via Pretoria to the Limpopo Province in Mabula Game Reserve in the surrounding area of the Waterberg Mountains. All the large game species from Elephant and Rhino to the big cats as well as an amazing variety of birds have settled here. We will head out on a sunset game drive in the evening

Day 3: Serowe, Botswana

Our destination today is the Khama Rhino Sanctuary via the Martin’s Drift border post. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing white rhino, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Batswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. We explore the sanctuary on an afternoon game drive in search of white rhinos.

Day 4: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana

Today we travel towards the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park area of Botswana. After settling into our accommodation, we take a sunset stroll with our guide through the surrounding baobab grove. He will explain the local ecology, geology and the unique biology of the baobabs, which are in fact not trees but the largest succulents in the world.

Day 5: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana

An early morning departure leads you to a half day trip into the Ntwetwe pan, the larger of the two Makgadikgadi pans, a vast expanse of sparkling salt that extends as far as your eye can see plus a little bit further. Remarkably there is life to be found here, some uniquely adapted desert species like the Springbok antelopes and the resident Kalahari cool cats, the meerkats. After our Ntwetwe Pan excursion, we return to the lodge for lunch, enroute we visit a local village to understand rural lifestyle of the locals hear. The rest of the afternoon you relax by largest pool in the Kalahari Desert.

Day 6: Greater Khwai, Botswana

After breakfast we continue with our journey past Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta to our camp situated in the greater Khwai/Moremi wildlife area. Enroute you may be lucky to spot some game as you transit through this wildlife paradise. After settling into our camp, why not take to the main area for a sunset drink and enjoy the beautiful environment of the camp.

Day 7: Greater Khwai, Botswana

We have the opportunity to spend the day on game drives. In our open 4×4 vehicle we will explore the Khwai Wildlife area on a full day game drive hopefully spotting a variety of game that frequent this region. Game viewing is seasonal; depending on the time of the year you may see different species in different areas. The best time for game viewing is the end of the dry season or spring from August to November. During this season, in order for us to offer the best game viewing possible, extra driving may be required due to the animals migrating closer to the rivers. In the summer, birdlife can also be viewed in abundance with exceptional sightings of raptors.

Day 8: Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana

Today we head back into the famous Moremi/Khwai Game Reserve known as one of the most beautiful and varied reserves in Africa with an unprecedented concentration of wildlife. The full day is spent in the unspoiled nature of reserve which is home to a great diversity of plant and animal life – making it a ‘must see’ for a Botswana Safari. It contains – within its boundaries – approximately 20% of the Delta, and a vast range of habitats, acacia forests, floodplains, reed beds, lagoons, enduring wetland through mopane forest and dry savannah woodland.

Day 9: Okavango Delta, Botswana

Drive to Guma Lagoon Camp on western side of the Okavango Delta. This is one of the places in Africa with a beautiful sunrise. The Okavango Delta is both a permanent and seasonal home to hundreds of species of animals and birds. Conservationists have taken a great interest in the preservation of the Botswana Delta, as it is such an exceptional area of Africa.

Day 10: Okavango Delta, Botswana

Transverse into the Okavango Delta by water and foot: on traditional mokoro excursion, as well as a guided walk on a secluded island.

Day 11: Mahangu National Park, Namibia

From the Okavango Delta in Botswana, you cross the border to Namibia, doing a game drive in the Mahangu Game Park enroute to your lodge.

Day 12: Chobe National Park, Botswana

Today we return to Botswana via the historical Caprivi Strip and on crossing the border we make our way to Kasane town, the gateway to the Chobe National Park. Enroute past the border post, keep an eye out for the wildlife in this area. Our lodge is situated on the bank of the Chobe River, a short distance from its confluence with the mighty Zambezi River at Kazungula.

Day 13: Chobe National Park, Botswana

We start the morning with an exciting game drive before returning to the lodge for breakfast. Chobe National Park, which along with many species of big game, boasts the largest concentration of elephants in Africa.  In the afternoon we will enjoy game viewing by boat on the Chobe River, watching elephants, hippos, crocodiles and a variety of birds without having to reach for our binoculars – you’ll be near enough for close-up photographs, as well as having the chance to witness a spectacular African sunset.

Day14: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Our journey takes us into Zimbabwe, home to one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the mighty Victoria Falls. In the afternoon we have a guided tour of the falls. On the next day you are at leisure to partake in one of the many optional activities on offer.

  • Windhoek– located almost in the heart of the country, the capital city retains its position as the first entry point for every traveller into Namibia. The city is clean, safe and well-organised, with a colonial legacy that is reflected in its many German eateries and shops, and the widespread use of the German language
  • Etosha & Sossusvlei – experience the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and the desolate and arid places of Etosha National Park.
  • Visit the AfriCat Welfare Centre and help assist in the conservation of threatened animal species.
  • Twyfelfontein – take a walk into Damaraland Twyfelfontein engravings and witness the old bushman’s way of life in this part of the world. Twyfelfontein is a World Heritage Site boasting one of the richest rock art concentrations in Africa, some 2, 500 Stone Age rock engravings.
  • Swakopmund – founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa with its sand beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean, this is a coastal city in Namibia showcasing colonial landmarks with a strong German heritage.
  • Namib- Naukluft National Park – the largest nature conservation area in Namibia with magical mountainous landmarks of bright gold. Rising steeply from the vast plains of Central Namibia, the rugged landscape holds a fascinating history, interesting geology and a boasts a variety of deep gorges, caves, small streams and beautiful waterfalls.
  • Fish Rive Canyon– the intermittent Fish River has created Africa’s largest and the world’s second largest canyon. Hot, dry and stony the 160 km long, at times 27 km wide and 550m deep canyon is awe inspiring. At the southern end is the renowned hot springs of Ai-Ais.

Day 2: Okonjima Nature Reserve, Namibia

Leaving the city life of Windhoek, we make our way to Okonjima Nature Reserve housing the AfriCat Welfare Centre in Okahanja. This evening we get the first experience of this conservation project by partaking on either a leopard tracking or on an endangered species sunset game drive offered by the Reserve. There are more than 40 mammal species within the Okonjima Nature Reserve, both large and small as well as a good representation of the typical flora. At the discretion of your reserve guide, there may be the chance to view some of these animals, large or small. The following morning we will visit the AfriCat Foundation Carnivore Care and Information Centre, a non-profit organisation set up to assist in the conservation of threatened, wild carnivores of Namibia in their natural habitat.

Visitors will be able to actively observe part of this program and learn more about these amazing and beautiful animals. The AfriCat Carnivore Care activity is where an Okonjima guide will take you to the AfriCat Information and Carnivore Care Centre, to observe and understand the work we aspire to do.

The reasons why we do it, the story of how it started the complicated process of rehabilitation and currently why the Okonjima Nature Reserve is no longer a suitable release site for rehabilitated cheetahs. Guests will be taken to the welfare enclosures which vary in size according to the particular group of cheetahs (min 1 ha per carnivore). Our guide will answer all questions, explain in detail why each cheetah is here and position the vehicle for that special photograph.

Days 3 -5: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Today mid morning, we head off to Etosha National Park. We fill the next 2 days with game drives in the hopes of spotting lion, leopard, elephant and rhino as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra and the numerous different types of antelope the park has to offer. Etosha Game Park was declared a National Park in 1907 and it is home to approximately 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species and, surprisingly, one species of fish.

Day 6: Damaraland, Namibia

We leave the wild animals of Etosha behind and move onto the spectacular scenery of Damaraland. In the heart of this typical Namibian environment, we visit the Twyfelfontein Bushman Rock engravings and the Petrified Forest. Our final destination for the day will be Omaruru, a village town situated just at the end of the Erongo Mountains.

Day 7 & 8: Swakopmund, Namibia

From Omaruru we head towards the coast to visit Cape Cross – the largest breeding place of the Cape Fur Seals. Leaving Cape Cross Seal, we follow the barren Skeleton coast to into the charming town of Swakopmund, an oasis set between the expanse of the desert and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. The afternoon is spent at leisure to partake in optional activities or alternatively just soak up the atmosphere of this little quaint German town and enjoy its beauty and beaches.

Day 9:  Swakopmund to Sossusvlei, Namibia

The day is spent driving through the Namib Naukluft National Park on our way to Sossusvlei.  The Namib-Naukluft Desert is an ancient land with an ageless spirit. It is home to some of the rarest plant and animal species in the world and sightings of this flora and fauna on a Namibian safari are a must. The animals of this harsh landscape include the Oryx, springbok and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra.

Day 10: Sossusvlei, Namibia

The next morning we need to wake up early to visit the world’s highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. These dunes, which can reach heights of over 300m, are absolutely spectacular and provide for a fantastic photo opportunity. With luck, there may even be water in the vlei (lake). We also stop to view the Sesriem Canyon, which was carved millions of years ago by the Tsauchab River.

Day 11: Fish River Canyon, Namibia

Today is a long driving day. We travel south to our accommodation which is situated close to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon on earth. Visit Ais-Ais hot springs and later in the evening we take in another perfect African sunset with the magnificent views and scenery along the edge of the canyon.

Day 12: Windhoek; Namibia

Leaving the gravel plains of the Fish River canyon behind, an early departure takes us back to Windhoek where we started our tour. The day carries with it one of our longest drives passing through small towns on the B1 main road, reminding us of the historical voortrekkers – the Boer farmers who moved along this route off  the Cape colony in South Africa into Southwest Africa in the 18 century.

In the afternoon, take a sundowner cruise up and down the Zambezi River. There is no better way to end the day than to watch an African sun slip down the horizon, while sipping drinks and enjoying light snacks. Birds, hippos and crocodiles abound in their natural habitat.

Day2: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

08:00hrs-Guided Tour of the Falls
You kick start your day with a visit to one of the greatest waterfalls in the world, ranked as one of the seven natural wonders around the globe. Your first stop will be by the ancient 23 metres plus towering Baobab with 16 metre girth, historical known as “The Big Tree”. Enjoy this wonderful phenomena right from Devil’s Cataract, on to the Main Falls, past the Rainforest and Rainbow Falls until you seal it with the Danger Point and a side view of the famous Victoria Falls Bridge.

07:30hrs – Chobe National Park Day Full Day Safari
Today you cross the border from Zimbabwe into Botswana for a lovely game viewing experience. After going through immigration and custom formalities you set out a 3 hour game drive into the Chobe National Park. Around 1200hrs you will have buffet lunch followed by a boat cruise on the Chobe River for 2 hours 30 minutes before you return to Victoria Falls to arrive around 1730 hrs.

After refreshing at your lodge, you take on to the Boma restaurant for dinner. Day 2: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Today after breakfast you will explore the mighty Victoria Falls waterfall on a guided walk and you round of your day by enjoying a romantic sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. Day 3: Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe

After breakfast you depart Victoria Falls and heard to your lodge on the banks of Lake Kariba. Lake Kariba, when constructed was the largest dam wall and artificial lake in the world, but although record has since been surpassed by others dams, it is still the world’s largest man-made reservoir by volume, making the Zambezi River home to two world greats – the other being the largest waterfall in the world, the Victoria Falls. Kariba’s reservoir volume is 185 billion m3, the surface area covers about 5500km2, and it extends for more than 280km, with a maximum width of 40kms. It is located just about halfway between the source and mouth of the Zambezi River and is 200kms downstream of the Victoria Falls. The lake lies on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, as does much of the Zambezi River.

Day 5: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Living Kariba Lake behind, you will drive to your lodge situated on the southern part of Hwange National Park. Hwange National Park is well known for the presidential herd of elephants. The lodge is overlooking a perennial waterhole that present an excellent opportunity to see these African giants plus other species of animals coming down for a drink especially at sundown. Depending on time of arrival you might take an orientation sunset game drive in the private lodge concession or just relax by lodge.

Day 6: Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Day 8: Matopos National Park, Zimbabwe

This morning you will participate on Rhino Tracking safari in the Matops National Park and then return to the lodge for a brunch. By the lodge environs enjoy the scenic views of this granite boulder topography, and in the evening visit Cecil John Rhodes grave at the famous ‘World View” plus one of the bushman caves.

Day 9: Great Zimbabwe Ruins, Zimbabwe

Today your safari continues with a considerable drive to The Lodge at the Ancient City in Masvingo. This afternoon you will enjoy a guided tour of the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. Great Zimbabwe is the name of the stone ruins of an ancient city near modern day Masvingo, Zimbabwe. People lived in Great Zimbabwe beginning around 1100 C.E. but abandoned it in the 15th century. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which was a Shona (Bantu) trading empire. Zimbabwe means “stone houses” in Shona.

Drive by the former residence of Bishop Desmond Tutu and visit Nelson Mandela’s former home. Continue to the Apartheid Museum, where you will journey through the racial segregation experienced by millions of South Africans.

Day 3: Johannesburg to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Transfer from the hotel to Oliver Tambo International airport to connect your flight to Victoria Falls. The rest of the evening you will relax by lodge facilities.
